UMOJA Works, established in 1995, is a national, federally tax exempt organization whose mission is to facilitate messaging that promotes healthy children and adults, particularly in under-served communities. The purpose was to provide alternative health information and education (especially HIV/AIDS and STD/STI-related) to the under-served all over the world through motion pictures. In 2017, the mission was expanded to facilitate the presentation of holistic, collaborative efforts that emphasize children's and young adult health education at every level and in every discipline.
The UMOJA Actors Studio curriculum, Art for Health ©, is an educational program that incorporates behavior change theory and healthy lifestyles with arts training sessions, hands-on practical experience, visiting professors, and production. The curriculum is the collaborative effort of staff and volunteers of UMOJA Works and the Actors Studio designed to promote mental and physical health through arts training and arts appreciation.
Advocacy in Motion is designed to celebrate the artistry of women in film and video, and features independent producers, directors, and cinematographers. The festival brings the independent motion picture community together to showcase our wealth of talent through motion picture photography, direction, and production, with an opening reception, free screenings, and panel discussions.
